Forte CD Review

Los Locos CD Cover

Forte Magazine - 8/2/2007

By Chris Dickinson.

Creative use of percussion, quiet but entrancing bass lines and some premium guitar and trumpet mesh together into grooves that work equally well as chill out tracks or dance music.

Recorded at BLX in ballarat, Los Locos' debut album is a restrained affair. The solos are not overly long or loud, the instrumentation is almost entirely acoustic and the songs unimposing. However, beneath the surface are details that betray how talented the local Latin quintet is. Creative use of percussion, quiet but entrancing bass lines and some premium guitar and trumpet mesh together into grooves that work equally well as chill out tracks or dance music. The band combines a number of latin styles with jazz sounds to create a unique tone that suits the original compositions. The lyrics (in both English and Spanish) are complemented by lilting melodies and the strong rhythmic currents never cease or grow stale. "Flee" opens with sinister acoustic guitar and has an uplifting chord prog that makes it a personal favourite but the band doesn't put a foot wrong all record. An excellent listen.
